WHY KONKAN

Konkan (Marathi: कोकण) is a coastal strip occupies the entire west coast of Maharashtra. It is to the heart of this serene landscape. The land of Konkan is bounded by the Sahyadri Mountain range (“Western Ghats”) on the East and the Arabian Sea on the West. The region consists of costal districts such as Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Thane.

Generally the climate of Konkan region is hot and humid. The region witness all climatic seasonal changes i.e. monsoon, winter and summer. Monsoon, from June to September, generally Konkan received rainfall between 300 mm up to 900 mm. July and August are quite rainy and typically the wettest months of the year, but by September the rainfall weakens.

During monsoon period the region looks attractive due to greenery around. Sometimes due to heavy rain, the region may observe flood.

Winter, October to

Because Konkan region receives heavy rainfall, natural vegetation is abundant and full of various useful trees and medicinal plants. Konkan is well known for its natural beauty and that’s the reason the region is referred as naturally gifted. Konkan's greenery, coconut trees, beautiful virgin beaches, waterfalls, mountains and lush green valleys will definitely provide a rich and pleasant experience for the traveler.

Most of the district area is covered by dense rain forest, and are suitable for habitant of wild animals.

Principle crops grown in the state are rice, jowar, bajara, wheat, tur, mung, urad, gram and other pulses. The state is major But Konkan is very well known for various Fruits grown here.

Coconut: We are all familiar with the coconut tree. It is named after it & fruit, coconut. We see coconut groves along the coastline. Sandy and saline soil and hot and humid weather is favorable for the coconut tree. Since such a climate precoastal areas of the district, dense grooves of these trees are found here.

It has been observed in last decade the there is a substantial rise in Poultry, Goat farming, Sweet water Fishery, Pearl Farming and Dairy Business in the coastal area after the development on the National Highway.

The Konkan Krushi Vidyapeeth In Dapoli has been very aggressive in researching in this field and have developed Goat and cow breeds specially for Konkan climate and have shown very high success in the field.

Fishery is also very extensively practiced in Konkan for long time.
